A friend emailed me this today. Its not every day that we see red astromech merchandise. These are little speakers that are shaped like R2 units. The speaker seems to be in the dome, which you flip up to use.
So now I have another example of this droid being called R2-D1. In the Hasbro Droid pack the red R2 unit was called R2-M5. Star Wars Wikia seemed to think that this was the official designation also.
I think I prefer the D1 over M5. Kinda ties in nicely to the whole NCAA D-1 thing.
